Iowa trucking group's trying to close job gap

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Motor Truck Association is looking for more than just a few good drivers.

President Brenda Neville says for nearly two decades, more people exited the industry than entered it.

"There is a driver shortage, there always has been, and there will be an even greater need for truck drivers" Neville says

She says they're trying to attract young drivers by borrowing from other trades, like electricians and plumbers, in setting up apprenticeships-- a way for young people to learn the job before getting behind the wheel of their own trucks.

Neville says they're also pushing for a change in federal law that currently prohibits people 18- to 21-years-old from driving semi trucks across state lines.
