Police: Ames man stabs puppy later found in dumpster

AMES, Iowa – An Ames man now faces charges of animal torture after police say he stabbed his pet puppy and left it in a dumpster.

Twenty-year-old Rashidi D. Simba was arrested Friday and booked into the Story County Jail on one charge of animal torture. Police say he admitted to stabbing a five-to-six month old German Sheppard because he was frustrated over having to potty train the puppy.

Ames Police Investigations Commander Jason Tuttle tells WHO Radio News neighbors in the area of the dumpster led police to Simba, who lives nearby.

"Our officers did some follow-up interviews and determined that the owner of the puppy lived in a nearby building. So we located the owner and he ended up admitting that he stabbed the puppy."

The Ames Police Department says the puppy was found to have a stab wound in his side.

Animal Control took the puppy to a vet clinic, where he received medical treatment until April 18th.

The puppy is now being cared for at the Ames Animal Shelter.

.Animal torture is an aggravated misdemeanor.
