More than 500 workers at the General Mills plant in Cedar Rapids will officially unionize after a vote on Wednesday.
KCRG-TV9 reports the workers will be part of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Local 110.
The vote will allow the union to represent 520 workers at the manufacturing facility in contract talks -- the workers in Cedar Rapids are on the production line, maintenance and sanitation.
Before the vote, General Mills management said it did not think the workers would be best served with a union bargaining collectively.
RWDSU also represents workers at the Quaker Oats factory in downtown Cedar Rapids.
