Former Iowa City mayor dies

Darrel Gene Courtney, a former city council member and mayor of Iowa City, has died, according to family members.

Courtney's obituary said the 69-year-old had passed after a long battle with cancer.

"Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, November 20th at First Christian Church, 900 Lincolnshire Place, Coralville with Rev. Jill Michel officiating," the obituary read. "Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 7 PM at First Christian Church."

Instead of flowers, memorials could be sent to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, First Christian Church, Coralville Food Pantry or Friends of the Animal Center Foundation.

Courtney was a University of Iowa graduate and had worked for 40 years as a financial advisor, according to the obituary. He had served on Iowa City's Planning and Zoning Commission and the city council for two terms, 1985 to 1993. From '92 to '93, Courtney served as mayor of the community and oversaw relief efforts during the flood of 1993.

"Darrel was a die-hard Hawkeye fan and enjoyed attending Football and Men's and Women's Basketball games," the obituary said. "He also enjoyed spending time on the lake with friends and family on his pontoon."

Courtney is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cynthia, and the couple's two sons, Brandon and Nathan.
