It's on East 7th Street near Highway 151 and the Millwork District. It was built in the 1880s, and Alliant bought it in the 1920s. For most of those years it ran on coal, but Alliant changed it to natural gas and then used the station only during peak times for high electrical needs.

Alliant spokesperson Mike Wagner said the company is tearing it down because it's not very efficient. The company is also moving away from using natural gas and instead relying more on solar and wind energy.

He can't say yet what Alliant will do with the land.

"There's a lot of interest in the area. I mean you look around, this is a very popular economic area. There's lots of people that have interest in it," he said. "So right now we're in talks and conversations to figure out what to do next, but at the moment we just don't have anything we can say."

Alliant hasn't used the generating station since last summer.

Wagner said the company hopes to have the site cleared by March.
