Mercy Hospital in Iowa City will soon be expanding to a new location in Coralville.
It will have 40 beds meant to treat adults recovering from neurological diseases, stroke or brain injuries. The services will provide up to three-hour intense sessions a day. They expect to open the rehab hospital in the first half of 2020. The plan is to make the eventual transition home smoother.
"It's critical for patients when they're being discharged from a hospital, if they've had a stroke or brain injury or other traumatic brain injury. To have a really intensive rehab program prior to returning either home or assisted-living or wherever they may be," said Mercy Iowa City President Sean Williams.
This will be the state's second freestanding inpatient rehab hospital. The new site will be on seven acres directly west of the Mercy Coral West building, at 2769 Heartland Drive in Coralville.
