Betwell Pleads Guilty to 2015 Dubuque Murder

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- A Dubuque man accused of raping and killing a woman in 2015 has pleaded guilty.

Helmon Betwell attacked Nancy Krapfl, who was 66, while she was taking a walk early on the morning of September 1, 2015. Over the last three years, health professionals have tested Betwell, who is now 22, multiple times to see if he was competent to stand trial. His case was scheduled to go to trial on Monday.

Krapfl's niece confirms Betwell took a plea deal Thursday afternoon. By pleading guilty to first degree murder, he had his sexual assault charge dismissed. A judge sentenced him to life in prison without chance of parole.

Krapfl's niece Tami Lansing says the family is relieved that justice has been served and that the family can now have peace.
