IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Two people have been arrested and charged with shooting at a store at the former Sycamore Mall, now known as the Iowa City Marketplace.
A criminal complaint says 29-year-old Michael Patrick Shapcott and 27-year-old Sara Rene Schrader walked into the Aaron's store at the Iowa City Marketplace just before 4:00 pm Monday. Surveillance video shows the pair walking behind the counter and reaching into the cash register before an employee interrupted them. They then left, got into an SUV and fired shots into the building.
Police found five shell casings but at least two shots entered the building. One shot went through a wall and several pieces of furniture before ending up lodged in a mattress. The other went through 2 walls, a picture, a TV and stopped against the back wall of the store. Employees were inside at the time but no one was hit.
Police say the pair admitted to firing shots at Aaron's as well as at the corner of Spruce St. and Highland Ave. a short time later. Police say one of those bullets hit the deck of a home nearby. No one was hurt in either shooting.
Authorities have charged 29-year-old Michael Patrick Shapcott and 27-year-old Sara Rene Schrader each with 2nd Degree Burglary and Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon.
