LISBON, IA (KCRG-TV9)-- Taking the field Friday wasn't easy for the BGM football team, especially for the senior starting quarterback Scott Tibbetts. He’s Mollie's younger brother. Up until Thursday, Scott hadn't decided if he would play in BGM's season opener in Lisbon.
Head Coach Jerod Burns says, “So he wasn't at practice on Tuesday, by his choice and then he was the one that initiated the conversation about coming to practice with me on Thursday, and he decided that he wanted to come to practice, and participate in practice, and prepare himself, then decide if he wanted to play on Friday."
Jerod Burns says he wasn't sure who he would be playing at quarterback on Friday. With a stadium full of fans wearing blue ribbons, and teammates wearing Mollie's initials on their jerseys and helmets to honor his sister, Scott took the field.
Burns says, "I thought Scott played really well. He made some really big throws and some really big plays with his feet for us, especially early in the first half, got us out to a really big lead."
The Tibbetts family was in the stands watching as Scott led BGM to victory. Scott finished the game with three touchdowns. After one his touchdowns, he celebrated with his teammates, and paused, taking a moment to point the sky.
Burns says, "I'm very proud of Scott. Not just for the way he performed on Friday, but just the way he handled this whole thing. He's a great for our leader our team. He sets an unbelievable example for not only his teammates but for everybody that goes to school with him, and everybody that knows him. He does things the right way."
Coach Burns says his team is playing this season in honor of Mollie. They hope to make her proud with their performance.
