CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- People could come to Cedar Rapids School's headquarters in search of a job on Monday. Specifically there are support-staff openings, like custodians, lunch cooks, para-professional educators and bus drivers.
Staff say they wanted to get as many people in the doors as possible.
"They may have two different kinds of interests and they may find that in the opportunities that we have," Suzy Ketelsen said.
And job seekers might consider other job positions available-- like in transportation. The district needs about 15 more drivers and a least a dozen more bus attendants.
"Attendants will help with kids on bus so kids are behaving property and also collect their belongings before they leave the bus," Transportation Manager Scott Wing said.
Wing says it's a challenge to fill those positions. So his office is now listing those positions in new ways, like with the hiring event. Other times it's new online posting or even community events.
"We've advertised in parades as well we've been putting our buses in local parades with signage on the bus," Wing said.
He wants to get those spots filled before school starts. If not, that'll mean combining bus routes and therefore, longer bus rides for children.
"We still follow all the legal guidelines for the routes it just makes it a little more crunched," Wing said.
Wing says his office can also be flexible with shift scheduling.
"Because they can come in the mornings and work that shift or in the afternoon, or work both shifts."
Wing says it's sometimes hard to attract people to work part-time. At max, school bus drivers work about 30 hours a week in Cedar Rapids. Salary starts around $13.75 an hour.
