DES MOINES, Iowa - Heavy rain, from two to 10 inches reported around the Des Moines metro area, led to widespread flash flooding across the Des Moines area Saturday night into Sunday morning.
WHO Radio listeners called in during our severe weather live broadcast to report flooding on the interstate highways.
Those two areas on I-80 near Merle Hay Road and I-35 near Ankeny were shut down for more than an hour until the flash flooding subsided. City streets were flooded and closed in many areas, including Ankeny, Maxwell, Dodge Center, Clive, and Urbandale.
In many cases drivers had a difficult time even seeing the standing water because of heavy rain after sunset.
Residents in Clive were evacuated by boat Saturday night. In Des Moines there were more rescues early Sunday morning.
WHO TV reporter Jodi Long reported live on the east side Sunday morning.
Water was reported five to six feet deep along Four Mile Creek.
About 100 people were evacuated from the Hilltop Apartments on East Douglas because of flooding there, and two people were rescued from a bridge after they were stranded there, surrounded by flood water all night.
