Special Needs Man's Bike Stolen

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - 24-year-old Dustin McArtor rides his bike around the neighborhood every day, but Tuesday morning he woke up to find it missing.

Surveillance video shows a person in dark clothing walking up the driveway, detaching a wagon from the bike, and taking off on it.

“It’s like his car, that’s how he gets around,” Dusty’s grandmother Connie Ross said. “We’d been putting it into the garage, but that night Dusty forgot to put his bike in the garage.”

It’s not just any bike. Dusty has special needs and Goldfinch Cyclery in NewBo customized it to fit his need, including a specialized breaking system.

“He was shaken as a baby, and has grown up to be a really nice young man,” Ross said. “It’s really an important, special, bike. It has a special seat for Dusty to use, and now it’s gone.”

Dusty is a big Hawkeye fan. He even saved money to help buy the black and yellow three-wheeled tricycle.

“He has a little job where he earns five dollars a week,” Ross said. “That’s the one thing he owns, that’s his.”

Ross said Dusty only had the bike for a few weeks before someone stole it. They reported the robbery to police and the department is now looking for it.

CRPD said there is not a reported increase in bike thefts, but they do happen. It recommends owners lock bikes to something solid and mark them with a specific number. Or it says to copy the serial number from the bike to aid in a search if it were to be stolen.

“It was heartbreaking, it was sad. I do not think Dusty really understands. He keeps thinking it’s just going to show up,” Ross said. “I couldn’t believe a grown man would steal a yellow three wheeled trike that obviously was for someone special.”

If you have any information about the whereabouts of Dusty’s bike please contact Cedar Rapids Police, 319-286-5350.

The family has created a gofundme account to raise money to replace Dusty's bike.
