Two Iowa Spellers Move On in Scripps Spelling Bee

WASHINGTON (KCRG-TV9) -- Iowa's two contestants in the Scripps National Spelling Bee are advancing after spelling two words correctly.

Tuesday was the first day of the spelling bee for Paula Braun and Oscar Patel, who are students in Dubuque County. Braun is an eighth grader who goes to Seton Catholic in Farley. Patel is a seventh grader at Mazzuchelli.

The KCRG-TV9 Washington DC Bureau caught up with Braun after she got off the stage to see how she felt once she correctly spelled andante.

"It feels really good. You feel relieved, especially if you knew the word," Braun said.

Tuesday was technically the second round of the spelling bee. So, Braun and Patel will compete in round three Wednesday.
