TAMA COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- UPDATE: Court records show the former director of Kids' Corner day care in Toledo is charged with money laundering and ongoing criminal conduct. Both charges are felonies.
A 130 page report released by the Iowa state auditor's office has found $278,362.58 worth of improper and/or unsupported spending at the Tama County Day Care (Kids' Corner) took place from December 8, 2009 through May 31, 2016.
The report says the purchases were made on a credit card by the day care's former executive director, Kristine Daniel. Records show purchases were made at retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Sam's Club for items that include alcohol, cigarettes, iTunes gift cards, video games, and a fish aquarium. Daniel was hired as executive director in December 2009.
The report notes Daniel paid herself more than $34,000 in unauthorized wages, and did not file payroll tax forms with the IRS for at least eight quarters, resulting in "significant penalties and interest owed to the IRS."
The audit was launched at the request of the Tama County Sheriff's Office and the Kids' Corner Board.
Copies of the auditor's report have been given to the Tama County Sheriff's Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Tama County Attorney's Office, and the Attorney General's Office.
