IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- On Tuesday, Council members in Iowa City unanimously approved the use of "soft" taximeters.
The new software will allow taxi-drivers to track taxi-meters through a phone or tablet, instead of having to purchase specialized tracking hardware.
At the same meeting, council members also approved allowing downtown businesses to have sidewalk cafes and mobile vendors in the Ped Mall for about the next year-and half.
The city says this decision is due to current construction of the Ped Mall improvement project.
City council approved a temporary lift of a city ordinance. That city ordinance usually bans mobile vendors after 45 continuous days in the Ped Mall.
