CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - Members of the community dropped off non-perishable food items and new household items for Waypoint Service’s May Baskets for the Homeless drive.
Tuesday, people dropped new pots, pans, cups, among other items, and stuffed a blue bus parked in front of Waypoint’s building. Event and Volunteer Coordinator Brittany Appleton said Waypoint will give those items to people leaving the shelter as a welcome kit for their new home.
“Often times the individuals we’re working with are experiencing a crisis, and when they come to us they don’t have a lot other than the basic necessities to get them through the day. As they’re moving into this new form of permanent housing, and this new step in their life, we want them to be successful. So, if we can give them all of the tools and those necessities that they need to do so, they’re much less likely to need our services again in the future,” Appleton said.
If you still would like to donate, you can drop off gifts at Waypoint Monday through Friday, 8 to 5 p.m.
