IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Construction started Monday on Ped Mall renovations in Iowa City. It's a multi-million dollar project that will replace the underground utilities and create a new foundation for walkways.
On Monday, construction crews put up a fence to block the construction area from pedestrians. They also removed some garbage bins and some containers and benches.
City Officials say the work really picks up tomorrow. That's when they will start working on taking apart the bricks, and demolition.
Officials say the Ped Mall needed updates to existing utilities like the water main, underground electrical, and telecom system They say the finished product will bring a big boost to the area.
City officials say they had meetings with nearby businesses about the project. Ped Mall renovations will be done sometime next year.
