Police Arrest Man after Waterloo House Hit with Gunfire

WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Police have arrested a Waterloo man after they said he fired several shots at a house overnight. Police said residents were home, but there were no injuries.

It happened around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday at 213 Denver Street.

Officers said they found a vehicle about two blocks away, in the 100 block of Western Avenue, and found a a .45-caliber handgun in a backyard nearby. Investigators also found .45-caliber shell casings at the scene of the shooting.

Police arrested 32-year-old Sunni Askari Mustafa Newell, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Witnesses told police they saw Newell with a pistol before and after the shooting. Police said red fibers on the gun were similar to a hooded sweatshirt Newell was wearing when he was arrested.

Newell is facing charges of intimidation with a weapon, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and going armed.
