Small Iowa Church’s Response to Charlottesville Violence Is Going Viral

INJOOne small Iowa church about two hours away from Des Moines is getting a lot of attention for its roadside sign in the wake of the tragic violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Usually just a place to announce upcoming potluck dinners, the sign in front of the First Christian Church of Glenwood has been used this week to broadcast the congregation’s rejection of white supremacy.

“White supremacy is sin. Say it,” the sign, which was first put up Saturday night, reads.

At press time, the tweet had been reposted more than 4,000 times and liked more than 11,000 times.

The church’s 34-year-old pastor, Evan Welcher, told the Des Moines Register that he is using the sign “to show solidarity with the people the white supremacists are publicly denouncing.”

“I’ve tried to learn from my African-American sisters and brothers in Christ about racism,” he said, “and one of the overwhelming frustrations I’ve heard from them is they do not believe their white sisters and brothers in Christ care about their plight.”
