Fiber optic line cut in Iowa City

Mediacom said a construction crew damaged a section of fiber optic cable in Iowa City causing an outage for customers in Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Iowa City, Kalona, Lone Tree, Riverside, Washington, Wellman, West Branch, and West Liberty.

A spokesperson said a construction vehicle working in the area of Dubuque Street and Prentiss Street in Iowa City snagged a low hanging fiber optic cable owned by Windstream at around 2 p.m. Thursday.

Mediacom leases some of the strands within the cable.

Mediacom said Windstream has crews on site to repair the cable, but they do not have an estimate of when the repairs will be completed.

Mediacom could not comment on other companies impacted by the damage to the line.
